DEVELOPMENT AND
CONSERVATION
The UNESCO Geoparks are probably the only territories in the world to cover almost all of the sustainable development goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.

ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN GLOBAL CHALLENGES
We have numerous and diverse missions which cover a very large majority of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals 2030 adopted by the United Nations. Obviously our missions relate to the conservation of the geological heritage as well as the conservation of the other heritages present in the territory of the Geoparks. They relate to education and of course research. One of our main missions is, from heritage promotion, to develop integrated sustainable development policies. These sustainable development strategies cannot exist without actions on poverty reduction, gender equality, population involvement.

Poverty reduction needs to be a result from the Geopark's sustainable development strategy.

UNESCO Geoparks participate to ensure health and well-being for all: local population as well as visitors.

UNESCO Global Geoparks promote education for all ages, highlighting the connection between geological heritage and other natural, cultural, and intangible aspects.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are committed to empowering women through education and the creation of cooperatives. These initiatives provide women with opportunities to generate income locally, fostering independence and sustainable development.

Water and sanitation are fundamental human rights. Geoparks promote sustainable water management, engaging local communities and schools to encourage youth participation in sustainability.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are territories of fostering innovation in conservation, tourism, and sustainable development. They serve as dynamic spaces for applying scientific research and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. As living laboratories, they inspire both experts and visitors to explore and appreciate science.

UNESCO Geopark result from a bottom-up process. Our local population is closely associated to the development of their territory and participate in the decision and future of the Geoparks.

UNESCO Global Geoparks integrate local and indigenous knowledge into the management of their territory, strengthening cultural identity and connection to the land. This promotes sustainable development and helps foster inclusive and resilient communities.

UNESCO Global Geoparks offer information on the impact of climate change, raising awareness of its effects on the environment. They promote awareness about geological risks such as volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis, educating the community and visitors about their causes, disaster prevention and response strategies.

Many UNESCO Geoparks are located close to marine area and participate in oceans threats mitigation.

UNESCO Global Geoparks are areas that embrace sustainability, value the heritage of Mother Earth and emphasize its protection. Key geological sites in Geoparks are safeguarded by local, regional or national laws and management authorities and relevant agencies to ensure adequate monitoring and preservation.
